Masterplan map a labour of loveBy Ben WilkinsonSoundbites jog memoriesBy Ben WilkinsonWORDS and pictures may be this page's usual stock in trade but an exciting new internet project has brought together some of Harlow's musical history. Zulqar Cheema has assembled a collection of sound clips at www.cheema.co.uk/localbands/index.htm with tracks from six bands which should bring memories flooding back for older gig-goers still living in the town. 25 YEARS AGO
25 YEARS AGOAugust 25, 1983FURY OVER RUBBISH HOUSEHOLDERS are furious that many dustbins are not being emptied because of revised refuse collection routes. The changes came about because Harlow Council decided to cut the refuse crews from six to four. Steve Smith, a refuse driver, said: "We are not able to catch up on the backlog. I estimate about 6,000 households were not emptied last week." COUNCIL ANGRY AT MAGAZINE A MAGAZINE article attacking the management of Harlow Market has enraged the council. The piece, in the July edition of Markets, claims there are irregularities in the way the market is run but a council spokesman called the article "offensive and biased". STRIKES OVER SACKED MANAGER UNION members at the Town Hall began striking on Friday in a bid to get sacked computer manager David Snell reinstated. As 90 members of the National and Local Government Officers' Association began picketing, candidates for his job were being interviewed inside. But MP Jerry Hayes, who pledged his supposed for Mr Snell at a mass meeting in July, said: "I shall continue to fight on his behalf, even if it means taking it to the Employment Secretary." WOOLWORTH JOBS TO GO WOOLWORTH has confirmed reports that there are to be 40 redundancies at its Broad Walk store. Two of the three shop floors are to close, leaving just the ground floor open.
